Becoming
This song was, among other things, a learning process in recording a song.
Things started years ago when I was playing around on guitar and came up with the main guitar parts. I decided to experiment with making as high a quality recording of it as I could, but I wasn’t real familiar with recording then. Jumping into things, I went to the music store to get an SM57 microphone and set off recording. I wasn’t getting things to sound how I wanted though, so I put the idea on the shelf, where it stayed for some time.
Fast forward several years, I was looking to finish some songs and I dusted this idea off. I had recently heard a tip about using the structure of another song as a blueprint for your own. Inspired by the multiple guitar solo sections in the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ song Scar Tissue, I decided to try something similar. Also, partly inspired by a fun video series on the writing of Weezer’s song, Turning Up the Radio (rabbit hole here), I included two different chorus sections back-to-back.
I next fleshed out the rest of the music and lyrics and then set out to make a recording a second time around. There was a lot to learn. Later on, after recording a few more songs, I came back a third time to further redo some things. At the end of that process, I’ve now learned some things to carry into future songs.
who’s to say what is to be
what they’re saying you don’t need
it doesn’t have to be how they see
he brings to life dead things
you’re finding your aim
don’t lose sight
hold on to faith
and it can make a way
sometimes you’re sinking
and your doubts are growing
how are you perceiving
where is it you’re focusing
what things may come when you believe
will faith or fear end up winning
press past those in your way
don’t let them lead you astray
find the voices in his name
these are your only days
